The Christians (1987) - Small Axe + Harvest for the world : see bottom of page

1) Forgotten Town

No life for living, where there's no time for giving,
No sign of loving, in this age of push and shoving.
Another man with a broken heart, can you see the pressure tearing me apart,
There's so much for me to overcome, should I stay or fight,
But where else is there I can run.

How can I get out, there's no way I can get out,
How can I get out, there's no way I can get out.

No life for living, where there's no time for giving,
No reassuring can end what I'm enduring.
I'm looking hard for the slightest sign,
Hear your words echoing around my mind,
I'm starting to believe what the papers say, yet one more blow,
  I'm reeling but I can't run away.

How can I get out, there's no way I can get out,
How can I get out, there's no way I can get out.

But if you'd open your eyes, you'd know there's so much you could do,
If you'd open your eyes, you'd make a thousand wishes come true,
Well this must be one of the troubles of the living in this forgotten town,
Don't get me wrong, hear the hollow words ringing now the chips are down.

No life for living, where there's no time for giving,
No reassuring can end what I'm enduring

How can I get out, there's no way I can get out,
How can I get out, there's no way I can get out.

But if you'd open your eyes, you'd know there's so much you could do,
If you'd open your eyes, you'd make a thousand wishes come true,
Well this must be one of the troubles of the living in this forgotten town,
Don't get me wrong, hear the hollow words ringing now the chips are down.

2)When the fingers point

You're the man with no choice, yes it's been decided that you've done wrong,
And there's no single voice that will stand up and say,
  Just what has he done,
For they all read the news, and it surely proofed enough for them,
And they flatly refuse to consider, was he really to blame.

Because when the fingers point, it's too much to take,
And when the fingers point, it makes your heart break.

Now you're moving away, for you cannot take it anymore,
No the man have explained it can alter their views,
  It's all happened before,
But where can you go where the evil eyes won't follow on,
No the curtains won't move everytime you walk by,
Boy just where can you run.

Because when the fingers point, it's too much to take,
And when the fingers point, it makes your heart break.

Now you've found a new home and a new place to hide,
where there's peace and shelter from the poison outside,
But before too long, there'll come a stirring-up the slime,
So don't kid yourself son,it's just a matter of time.

Because when the fingers point, it's too much to take,
And when the fingers point, it makes your heart break.

3) Born again

I used to wake in the afternoon,
When the sunshine finally cut through the haze,
I really don't remember that much I just know I wasted a thousand days.
We need protection from this infection, something to ease this cruel disease,
A ray of hope in a new direction,
I called to you and you rescued me.

Because when you're around, I feel like I'm born again,
  I'm through going down,
In you I've got a better friend.

Yes i know I'm the lucky one,
And now I've got a brand new life to live,
But one of the ones that didn't get away,
They've taken so much, we've got nothing left to give.
Now we can do without the reprobation,
Let's try some love and some sanity,
I know the thousands all over the nation,
I thank the Lord that you rescued me.

Because when you're around, I feel like I'm born again,
  I'm through going down,
In you I've got a better friend.
I've got this feeling I'm born again.

I used to wake in the afternoon,
When the sunshine finally cut through the haze,
I really don't remember that much I just know I wasted a thousand days.
We need protection from this infection, something to ease this cruel disease,
A ray of hope in a new direction,
I called to you and you rescued me.

Because when you're around, I feel like I'm born again,
  I'm through going down,
In you I've a better friend.
I've got this feeling I'm born again.

You could let go if you wanted to...

4) Ideal World

Before you point the finger, and hope the whole thing disappears,
Remember empty words will fall, a fall upon the deafest ears,
He won't give in without a fight,
And foul play without a doubt,
No silver linen to be seen, in this thundercloud,
   No that's not allowed,

In the ideal world, we'll be free to choose,
But in my real world, you can bet we're gonna loose.

   Your money fills their pockets,
And fear fills their tiny minds.
At last the world is talking now, this ain't no way to treat mankind.
A sudden blackout stops the show,
But doesn't stop the way I am,
Because on my life I've been oppressed,
You're not the first to say I am,
   I do all I can,

For an ideal world, where we're free to chose,
   For in my real world,
You can bet we're gonna lose,
In the ideal world,We can start again,
Now in my real world, hangs on the colour of your skin.

We could be free forever, if they would only change,
   But fools never change.

A speck of blue hope in the sky,
A song of hope, a noble thought,
But how long must the people die,
Before the guilty ones are caught,
   Will you spare a thought,

For an ideal world, where we're free to chose.
For an ideal world, where we're no longer born to lose,
In the ideal world, we can start again,
Now in my real world, let's put an end to suffering.

In the ideal world, where I'm free to choose,
Now in my real world,We are safe to air our views,
In the ideal world, we can start again,
Now in my real world, it matters not about the colour of your skin...

5) Save a soul in every town

Lord you saved me from myself, won't you save somebody else,
I know, I no longer need you.
Because when I was down and out, you heard me scream and shout,
Please show, you hear others who need you.
Won't you take them by the hand,
Come on and lead them from this barren land,

Won't you save a soul in every town,
Please save a soul in every town

  From the strength of belief,
we'll put an end to all our grieves,
But first, let it not be forgotten
You can help the feeble up,
But don't ever let them dry,
We must stay around to support them.
Won't you take them by the hand,
Come on and lead them from this barren land,
Won't you save a soul in every town,
Save a soul in every ton.

Save a soul who is hungry and starts to cry,
And the mother who fears that her well runs dry,
With your help we can give them a better life,
  Free from trouble and strife.

Lord you saved me from myself, won't you save somebody else,
I know, I no longer need you.
Won't you take them by the hand,
Come on and lead them from this barren land,

Won't you save a soul in every town
Please save a soul in every town.

6) And that's why

Fear is the key, that's closing the doors,
No time for love, where there's no time for trust,
And fear plays a part in everybody's downfall,
Those suspicious minds that refuse to unwind,
  They've decided, and they won't re-adjust.

And that's why, why we're not saying much,
And why, we must sort this thing out.
So talk to me now, don't cause me more pain,
Tell me what's on your mind,
And please tell me what have I done,
The unspoken words, and those looks of disdain,
Unless we do try, we won't see eye to eye,
And we'll loose what's been good for so long

And that's why, why we must talk again.
And why,we must sort this thing out,
And that's why there's no more compassion left,
And why our future's in doubt,
  Let sort it out.

So talk to me now, don't cause me more pain,
Unless we do try, we won't see eye to eye,
And we'll lose what's been good for so long.
And that's why, why we must talk again,
And why we must forget the past,
And that's why,we shouldn't let go no more,
And why, yes our future will last.

7) Hooverville

The doubt of work sends the out of work man,
To city a hope and a home.
One door shuts here another two slam,
Yes he's homeless he's hopeless alone.
Row upon row of a castle in Spain, make up a fool's paradise.
The still born brainchild of a main with no brain,
The ballot box baby that died.

Oh Hooverville, and they promised us the world,
In Hooverville, said the streets that were paved with silver and gold,
Oh Hooverville, yes they promised us the world,
  Crying for the moon.

Dirty faced children sit in the road, in the shanty town shacks they call home.
The comfort of knowing they won't be there long,
Is the only comfort they know.
A young scream a young dream is lost in the night,
Along with the young will to live,
Along with the masses, that gave up the fight,
A fight for a reason to live,

Oh Hooverville, and they promised us the world,
In Hooverville, said the streets that were paved with silver and gold,
Oh Hooverville, yes they promised us the world,in Hooverville,
And as fools we believed every last word they said,
I believed every last word you said.

Oh Hooverville, and they promised us the world,
In Hooverville, said the streets that were paved with silver and gold,
Oh Hooverville, and they promised us a roof above our heads,
  in Hooverville,
And as fools we believed every last word they said,

Their hope is so high, when they arrive,
Their hope is their only possession in life,
Another man dies, another man cries,
Mr Politician open up you eyes,
  Open up your eyes,
  Crying for the moon.

8) One in a million

Well hello it's been so long,
and I see time has been kind to you.
Though we once were handing gloves,
You're not the same person I once I knew.
Take a good look at yourself,
From the frown and despairing eyes,
Once were fiery and so bright,
  Now seem sad and unsatisfied.

Wipe the tears from your eyes,
  And remember you are

One in a million, one chosen soul,
One in a million, do you wonder what the future holds.

  Another time another place,
And things might have worked out differently,
But don't blame the entire human race,
For a fault that you can see,
  Re-inject some self-respect,
It's the one thing you must never lose,
  And with your confidence intact,
You've got a second chance, so much to prove,

  Drop the solemn disguise,
  And remember you're

One in a million, one chosen soul,
One in a million, do you wonder what the future holds.
One in a million, one shining star,
  Once in your lifetime,
You must realize, that's what you are.

Wipe the tears from your eyes,
  And remember you are

One in a million, one chosen soul,
One in a million, do you wonder what the future holds.

9) Sad songs

  I was only a child,
But I cannot forget all the words of regret
  And the cool haunting smile,
Have they lost that magical style,

Where are those sad, sad songs,
  I don't hear those sad,sad songs, anymore
  The songs of Suzy Solidor.

  She sang "Night&Day",
To the fast fading stars in old broken bars,
  That were full yesterday,
Now they've cleared all the tables away,

Where are those sad, sad songs,
  I don't hear those sad,sad songs, anymore,
  The songs of Suzy Solidor.

She took her last bow, sang her last song,
can't hear her now, can't hear her now,
  Suzy's gone.

  Only vague memories remain,
For the lonely old men she sang only for them,
As she found a spotlight of fame,
If they'd only remember her name,

Where are those sad, sad songs,
  I don't hear those sad,sad songs, anymore,
  The songs of Suzy Solidor.

Small Axe (Bob Marley)

  Why boasteth thyself
  Oh, evil men
  Playing smart
  And not being clever?
  I said, you're working iniquity
  To achieve vanity
But the goodness of Jah, Jah
  I - dureth for - I - ver

So if you are the big tree
  We are the small axe
  Ready to cut you down
  To cut you down

  These are the words
Of my master, keep on tellin' me
  No weak heart
  Shall prosper
  And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it, fall in it
  And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it (... fall in it)

If you are the big tree, let me tell you that
We are the small axe, sharp and ready
Ready to cut you down (well sharp)
  To cut you down

Harvest for the world (1988)

All babies together, everyone a seed
Half of us are satisfied, half of us in need
Love's bountiful in us, tarnished by our greed
Oh when will there be a harvest for the world?
A nation planted so concerned with gain
As the seasons come and go greater grows the pain
Far too many feeling the strain
When will there be a harvest for the world?

  Gather every man
  Gather every woman
  Celebrate your lives
  Give thanks for your children
  Gather everyone
  Gather all together
  Overlooking none
Hoping life gets better for the world
When will there be a harvest for the world?

Dress me up for battle when all I want is peace
Those of us who pay the price come home with the least
Nation after nation turning into beasts
When will there be a harvest for the world?
